Hardwood Floor Sanding, Refinishing & Repair in Schenectady County, NY
Bringing Schenectady's wood floors back
Schenectady County has some of the oldest wood floors in the Capital Region, and some of the best. Allwood Floors LLC has sanded, repaired and refinished floors here since 2001.
Schenectady County homes and their floors
-
Historic homes in the city, including the Stockade, the GE Realty Plot and other older neighborhoods. Many of these houses still have original hardwood or softwood floors that have been refinished several times. Before we sand, we check board thickness, exposed nails and old repairs so we don't take off more wood than we have to.
-
Early-1900s and post-war homes in Schenectady, Scotia, Glenville and Rotterdam. Many have oak floors under carpet or old linoleum. Once the adhesive and staples are dealt with properly, a sand and refinish often makes them look new again.
-
Niskayuna and suburban neighborhoods, where mid-century and newer homes often need a refinish, a color change, or new hardwood that matches existing floors.
Rivers, basements and seasonal movement
With the Mohawk River running through the county, many older homes have damp basements and crawlspaces in summer and very dry heated air in winter. Wood follows that cycle: it swells when it absorbs moisture and shrinks when it dries. Cupping over damp basements and gaps in winter are both common. The NWFA recommends holding indoor conditions at 60–80°F and 30–50% relative humidity year-round (NWFA, Problem Prevention). We test for moisture before installing or repairing a floor so we fix the cause, not just the symptom.
Common floor problems we see in Schenectady County
-
Floors sanded thin from many past refinishes.
-
Cupped boards over damp basements or near old plumbing.
-
Pet stains and water stains that may need boards replaced, not just sanding.
-
Squeaks and loose boards in older framing.
-
Patchwork floors where rooms were opened up and new boards don't match the old ones.
-
Dull but healthy floors that only need a screen and recoat. That costs less than a full refinish, and we will tell you if that's all you need.

FAQ: Hardwood floors in Schenectady County
My floors are over 100 years old. Can they still be sanded?
Often, yes. It depends on how much wood is left above the tongue or nails. We check that first. If a full sand isn't safe, we will suggest alternatives such as a recoat or targeted board replacement.
Do I need a full refinish or just a recoat?
If the finish is dull but not worn through to bare wood, a screen and recoat may be enough. Deep scratches, gray worn spots or stains usually need a full sand and refinish.
Why are my boards cupping?
Cupping, where the edges sit higher than the centers, usually means moisture is coming from below, often from a damp basement or crawlspace. We find and address the source before repairing the floor.
Can you match new boards to my old floor?
In most cases, yes. We weave in boards of the same species and width, then sand and finish the whole area so it blends.
