Hardwood floors for Saratoga County homes, since 2001

From Victorian homes in Saratoga Springs to newer neighborhoods in Clifton Park, Halfmoon and Malta, Allwood Floors LLC installs, sands, stains and refinishes wood floors throughout Saratoga County. We are based just down the Northway in Latham.

Saratoga County homes and their floors

Saratoga County covers two very different kinds of housing:

  • Older homes in Saratoga Springs and Ballston Spa. Victorian and early-1900s houses often have original oak, maple or pine floors, sometimes with borders or inlays. These floors deserve careful sanding, so we keep as much of the original wood as we can, and we match replacement boards to the old ones.

  • Newer subdivisions in Clifton Park, Halfmoon, Malta and Wilton. Many of these homes have factory-finished or builder-grade floors, and their owners usually want one of three things: a new color, a tougher finish for kids and pets, or hardwood carried into rooms that currently have carpet.

Color and finish: a Saratoga specialty

Many of our Saratoga County jobs involve changing the look of red oak, especially taking out the orange and yellow tones that older oil finishes produce.

Seasons, lake houses and humidity

Saratoga County winters are long and dry indoors, and summers near Saratoga Lake and the Hudson can be humid. Wood swells in damp air and shrinks in dry air. This movement is hardest on seasonal and lake homes that sit closed up or lightly heated for part of the year. The NWFA recommends keeping homes at 60–80°F and 30–50% relative humidity year-round (NWFA, Problem Prevention). If a home sits empty for part of the year, a humidistat-controlled humidifier or dehumidifier is cheap insurance.

Common floor problems we see in Saratoga County

  • Orange or yellowed oak that homeowners want to update to a modern natural or gray-brown look.

  • Scratches from pets and kids in busy family homes.

  • Worn finish in mudrooms, kitchens and entryways from winter sand and salt.

  • Gaps, cupping or crowning in seasonal homes with big humidity swings.

  • New-construction floors that were installed before the house dried out, then moved as the house settled.

FAQ: Hardwood floors in Saratoga County

Can you get rid of the orange color in my oak floors?

Usually, yes. A full sand removes the old finish, and a toned sealer or stain can neutralize red oak's orange tones.

What is the most durable finish for a home with dogs?

Finish choice matters, and so does the wood species. Harder species and a durable commercial-grade finish hold up better. We will walk you through the options on our pricing page during your estimate.

Do you refinish floors in older Saratoga Springs homes?

Yes. We check how much wood is left before sanding, and we repair or replace damaged boards to match.

My lake house floors gap and cup. What can I do?

Big humidity swings are the usual cause. Keeping the house at 30–50% humidity year-round, even when nobody is there, helps the most. We can inspect the floor and recommend repairs.

Do you work in Clifton Park and Halfmoon?

Yes, both are regular service areas for us.
