Hardwood Floor Restoration & Refinishing in Troy and Rensselaer County, NY
Restoring Troy's original floors, and installing new ones across the county
Troy has some of the most impressive 19th-century housing in the Capital Region, and a lot of it still has original wood floors. Allwood Floors LLC has restored, refinished and installed wood floors across Rensselaer County since 2001, from downtown Troy brownstones to newer homes in East Greenbush and Brunswick.
Rensselaer County homes and their floors
-
Troy rowhouses and brownstones downtown, in Washington Park, Lansingburgh and nearby neighborhoods. These homes often have original plank floors, softwood subfloors, borders and inlays, and floors that have been painted, carpeted or patched over many decades. Restoring them takes patience: we pull old fasteners, replace damaged boards with matching wood, and sand carefully to keep as much original material as possible.
-
Multi-family and investment properties in Troy and Rensselaer, where landlords need durable floors refinished quickly between tenants.
-
Suburban and rural homes in East Greenbush, North Greenbush, Brunswick, Schodack and further east, from farmhouses to newer builds. They need everything from new installs to refinishing.
Old houses, river air and the heating season
Older Troy homes often have stone or brick foundations, damp basements and drafty upper floors. Add humid Hudson Valley summers and dry, heated winters, and wood floors move a lot during the year. Gaps open in winter, and boards can cup over damp spaces in summer. The NWFA recommends keeping indoor conditions at 60–80°F and 30–50% relative humidity year-round (NWFA, Problem Prevention). On restoration jobs, we look at the moisture source first.

FAQ: Hardwood floors in Troy and Rensselaer County
Can you restore the original floors in my Troy brownstone?
In many cases, yes. We assess board thickness, damage and past repairs first, then recommend a full restoration, a partial repair, or a lighter refinish.
There's paint (or carpet glue) on my old floors. Can they be saved?
Often they can. Sanding removes most paint and adhesive. Badly damaged boards can be replaced with matching wood.
What causes the big gaps in my old floorboards?
Mostly dry winter air shrinking the wood. Gaps that come and go with the seasons are normal. If they never close, or they are very wide, a repair may be needed.
Do you repair water-damaged floors?
Yes. We find out how far the moisture spread, replace damaged boards, and refinish so the repair blends in.
Do you work outside the City of Troy?
Yes. We serve Rensselaer County, as well as Albany, Saratoga and Schenectady counties.
