FAQ

What is the difference between solid and engineered hardwood?

Solid Hardwood: Milled from a single piece of wood, typically 3/4-inch thick. It can be sanded and refinished multiple times over decades, making it a lifetime investment. However, it is prone to expanding and contracting with humidity, so it shouldn't be installed in basements. Engineered Hardwood: Built with a real wood top layer (the wear layer) bonded over cross-laminated layers of plywood. This construction makes it highly stable and resistant to moisture fluctuations, allowing it to be installed on any level of your home, including basements.

How do I know which wood species is right for my home?

The right species depends on your lifestyle and aesthetic goals. We look at the Janka Hardness Rating to determine durability. For busy households with pets or children, high-traffic woods like Hickory or White Oak are highly resilient. If you prefer a modern, clean look, Maple offers a subtle grain, while Walnut provides rich, darker tones.

How long does a typical hardwood installation take?

The size of your room and the intricacy involved will affect how long it takes to install hardwood flooring in your home. However, you need allow one to two weeks for the installation process.

What do I need to do to prepare my home before installation day?

To ensure a smooth installation, we ask homeowners to handle the following before our team arrives: Clear the Rooms: Remove all furniture, electronics, and breakable items from the workspace. Clear Wall Hazards: Take down low-hanging artwork or drapery that could accidentally be bumped. Plan for Pets: The noise from nail guns and saws can be stressful for pets. We highly recommend keeping them in a separate area of the house or off-site.

Will there be a lot of dust during the process?

We utilize state-of-the-art dust containment systems to provide a dustless process. We also mask off doorways as an additional precaution. A final vacuuming is always part of our cleanup process as well.

What is the best way to clean and maintain my hardwood floors?

Protecting your investment is simpler than you think: Daily/Weekly: Sweep or use a microfiber dust mop to remove grit and dirt, which act like sandpaper under pressure. If vacuuming, ensure the beater bar is turned off to prevent scratching. Mopping: Never use a dripping wet mop. Water is hardwood’s worst enemy. Instead, use a slightly damp microfiber mop with a professional cleaner specifically formulated for wood floors (like Bona). Proactive Care: Place felt protector pads under all furniture legs and replace them annually. Put breathable walk-off mats at exterior entryways to catch dirt before it hits your hardwood.

Can my floors be sanded and refinished if they get scratched?

If you have solid hardwood or an engineered wood floor with a thick wear layer, absolutely. For minor surface wear, we can often perform a screen and recoat—a process where we lightly scuff the top layer of polyurethane and apply a fresh topcoat without sanding the wood itself. For deep scratches or color changes, a full sand and refinish will restore them to brand-new condition.
